About – LFA Tai Chi Edinburgh

28 Years of Gentle Healing Through Movement

Helping Edinburgh residents over 40 rediscover the joy of pain-free movement through authentic Chinese medicine-based Tai Chi

My Journey from Pain to Teaching

I never planned to become a Tai Chi instructor. Like many of you, I started this journey because I was searching for relief from my own physical struggles.

Twenty-eight years ago, my back was a constant source of frustration. My knees felt like they belonged to someone twice my age, and I could feel my balance becoming less reliable with each passing year. The doctors had their suggestions – pills, physio, maybe surgery eventually – but nothing addressed what I instinctively knew my body needed: gentle, healing movement that worked with my body’s natural wisdom, not against it.

That’s when I discovered LFA Tai Chi, a style deeply rooted in the time-tested principles of Chinese medicine. Unlike the flashy martial arts demonstrations you might see in films, this was something entirely different – a therapeutic practice designed to restore the body’s natural balance and energy flow.

The difference was remarkable. Within just a few weeks of practice, my joints felt smoother, my posture improved, and that nagging back pain that had been my daily companion for years began to fade. More importantly, I felt like myself again – energetic, confident in my movement, and optimistic about my body’s future.

That transformation changed everything for me. I knew I had to share this gentle yet powerful practice with others who were struggling with the same challenges I had faced.

What Makes LFA Tai Chi Different

After nearly three decades of teaching, I’ve learned that not all Tai Chi is created equal. The LFA style I practice and teach is specifically designed around the healing principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine – the same ancient wisdom that has been helping people maintain health and vitality for thousands of years.

The Chinese Medicine Foundation

In Chinese medicine, good health comes from the smooth flow of Qi (life energy) through our body’s meridian system. When this energy becomes blocked or imbalanced – often due to stress, injury, or simply the wear and tear of daily life – we experience stiffness, pain, and reduced vitality.

Every movement in our LFA Tai Chi practice is designed to gently restore this energy flow. We’re not just moving our arms and legs; we’re opening meridian pathways, stimulating acupressure points, and encouraging our body’s natural healing mechanisms to function optimally.

Why This Approach Works So Well for People Over 40

As we age, our bodies need a different kind of movement than what worked in our twenties and thirties. High-impact exercise can actually worsen joint problems and create new injuries. Our gentle, flowing movements work with your body’s current condition, gradually improving strength, flexibility, and balance without stress or strain.

The Chinese medicine approach also recognizes that physical symptoms often have emotional and energetic components. Many of my students are amazed to discover that as their joint pain improves, they also feel calmer, sleep better, and have more mental clarity. This isn’t coincidence – it’s the natural result of restoring balance to your whole system.

My Credentials & Experience

28 Years Teaching LFA Tai Chi
• 1000+ Students Helped
• 100% Chinese Medicine Based Approach
• Edinburgh Based & Serving Scotland

My training in LFA Tai Chi goes far beyond learning the physical movements. I’ve spent years studying the underlying Chinese medicine principles that make this practice so effective for healing and health maintenance. This deep understanding allows me to adapt the practice for students with different health conditions, physical limitations, and personal goals.

Based here in Edinburgh, I’ve had the privilege of working with hundreds of Scottish students over the years. From busy professionals dealing with desk-job stiffness to retirees looking to maintain their independence and mobility, I’ve seen how this gentle practice can transform lives at any age.

Why I Moved to Online Classes

For many years, I taught exclusively in-person classes around Edinburgh. But I noticed something troubling: many of the people who needed Tai Chi most – those dealing with mobility issues, transportation challenges, or simply feeling too self-conscious to join a group class – weren’t able to access the benefits of this healing practice.

The shift to online classes has been a revelation. Students can practice in the comfort and privacy of their own homes, at their own pace, without worrying about keeping up with others or feeling judged. The intimate nature of our Zoom classes means I can give personalized attention to each student, offering modifications and encouragement based on their individual needs.

“I love being able to practice in my living room with a cup of tea waiting for me. No rushing to get somewhere, no finding parking, no feeling embarrassed if I need to sit down. It’s perfect for my lifestyle and my body’s needs.” – Margaret, 67, Edinburgh

Plus, with access to all class recordings, students can practice whenever they feel like it – whether that’s first thing in the morning, during a lunch break, or in the evening when the day’s stresses need to be released.

My Teaching Philosophy

After 28 years of teaching, I’ve learned that the best Tai Chi practice is the one you’ll actually do consistently. That’s why my approach is refreshingly non-intimidating. There’s no pressure to be perfect, no complex sequences to memorize overnight, and absolutely no judgment about your current fitness level or mobility.

EveryBody is Different

I’ve worked with students recovering from hip replacements, managing arthritis, dealing with chronic pain conditions, and simply wanting to age more gracefully. Each person’s needs are unique, and I pride myself on adapting the practice to work for you, exactly as you are today.

Progress, Not Perfection

Some days you’ll feel strong and flexible. Other days, you might need to practice sitting down or modify movements because of stiffness or pain. Both are perfectly fine. The Chinese medicine approach recognizes that our energy and physical condition naturally fluctuate, and our practice should honor that reality.

Community and Support

While classes are online, you’re never practicing alone. Our small class sizes create a warm, supportive community where students often share their experiences, celebrate improvements, and encourage each other through challenges. Many lasting friendships have formed through our shared commitment to better health and wellbeing.
